Anonymous asked: Don't you think that if you are going to put yourself in a police car and be along with police while they do their job in any capacity you should be as safe as possible like they are?If you do think you should have your safety in mind as they are trained to do for themselves that you should do the same thing. If you believe that is true then the least you should do is request a vest to wear from beginning to the end of ALL RIDE ALONGS. The policeman at VT was sitting in his car.You are at risk.
Agreed.
After the shootings on the Virginia Tech campus today, I sort of question the safety of those like me who do the ride-alongs with the police departments around here. I myself do a lot of ride-alongs. I LOVE them. I think it is fascinating and I love being able to go where the police go and see what they do first hand. I have also HAD to do them for a class before.
It was brought to my attention today that when we go on these ride-alongs, we assume we are safe. I mean, we are with the police, right? Unfortunately, as proven today, that is not always the case. What if the officer had a student in the car with him as a ride-along? Would the shooter have shot the other student too? Or would it have made a difference? My point here is, when we go on these ride-alongs (at least here at VCU police), we are not offered any sort of protection against incidents like this one. A vest or something would be wonderful. But it is just not offered. Should it be mandatory that you wear a vest or some sort of protection?
When I did a ride-along the other night, we did plenty of routine traffic stops just like this officer did. Its kind of scary to me that this could happen to anyone. I hope this gets brought to the attention of the right person…
In compliance with the provisions of the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act of 1988 , Virginia Commonwealth University is giving notice of an armed robbery. VCU Police report that two suspects approached a male student on the 1000 block of Park Avenue near the Monroe Park campus at approximately 9:20 p.m. and robbed him at gunpoint. The suspects stepped out of an alleyway and forced the student off the sidewalk into the alley, where they took his belongings, including a backpack, a laptop, a cell phone and an iPod. The victim was not harmed. Both suspects are described as black males about 5-feet-10-inches tall. The armed suspect is described as wearing a black hoodie with gold lettering, brown boots and a black handkerchief, which covered his face. The handkerchief had a skull on it. The other suspect was wearing dark clothing. VCU Police are investigating. Students are asked to be aware of their surroundings, report suspicious activity to police and use the campus escort service. Anyone with information pertaining to this crime can contact the VCU Police Department at (804) 828-1234 or text VCUTIP to 274637 anonymously.
